Top Halloween Costume Ideas

By Rand Fortescue

With Halloween just round the corner, people start to think about celebrating the special night in a manner that will stay with them until the next time the holiday rolls around. One way to make the night memorable is to wear a unique costume. For adults this means making a big impression at the party or for children to wow or scare their friends when they go trick or treating. So with this in mind, here are a few top Halloween costume ideas for 2010.

Most memorable Halloween costumes are generally topical and trendy. They are usually inspired by popular culture or some special or significant event.

For instance, there are bound to be people going to parties in BP overhauls with grease and oil over their clothing and face. Maybe they will have a broken monkey wrench as a prop too. Whilst this may not be in the best taste, given the massive environmental and the economic damage that has been caused as a result of the oil spewing into the sea, I would say a party is about being slightly risque or tacky. It gets people in the mood and helps them to lose their inhibitions – which are generally the hallmark of a good party (and probably quite therapeutic too).

Other top Halloween ideas for 2010 might be inspired by popular culture, notably movies that have just come out or classic movies that have stuck in the public consciousness over the years.

In terms of recent movies, you can’t go past Avatar, Ironman 2 and even Clash of the Titans.

The avatar costumes are very distinctive, given that you are dressing as an alien creature. The aquamarine blue color of the skin will be an instant give away about who you are. You could probably do this by applying skin friendly paint or better still purchase an Avatar costume. The costume will include a mask to make you look just right.

Another film that has spawned a few costume ideas this year is “The Clash of the Titans”. This story is based on Ancient Greek myths – legendary heroes, hideous creatures and all powerful Gods. And people love this sort of thing.

The costumes inspired by the film include Medusa the snake headed creature. The creature is usually portrayed as an attractive looking woman in modern interpretations. It is the perfect mix of looking elegant but also slightly scary.

Other costumes inspired by Greek myths include gods and goddesses like Zeus, Aphrodite, Hades, Poseidon and Athena. There are also Greek heroes. The main hero in clash of the Titans is Perseus. In the recent film he has a very contemporary look (as played by Sam Worthington) but that doesn’t mean you have to go like that.

Most ancient Greek costumes consist of a tunic or toga – usually white. You might add accessories like arm and leg gauntlets, even an armored breastplate. You could also get a helmet if you are a hero or maybe a crown or elaborate headpiece if you are a god or goddess.
